Must pace self so fingers don't get so tired....
30 minutes of fan spins! OK, really more like 20 minutes of fan spins and another 10 of chasing the fan across the room when it flips out of my hands.

Saturday: #4 of the challenge twenty minutes of fan spinning drills. one song dancing with lit fans and two hours of boogie'ing at Solovox's birthday. finished installing laminate flooring in dance studio space! Sunday: #5 of the challenge
1.5 hours boogie'ing to Melting Pot at MUSE ecstatic dance 30 minutes creeping around the roller rink at C$'s birthday Conclusion: Birthdays make it so easy to get my 30 minutes of movement in! Birthdays make it so hard to not drink alcohol this month! Last week I talked Erika Ryn into attending a samba class with DonnaMation, because we were getting jazzed at the idea of this Challenge and wanted a head start (and because it's Donna, I mean, com'on!) Erika texted me from the studio, "Fridays Centerspace 7:45pm Salsa in the Round, $7!" I thought, hey that's just cheap enough for me to try! I've been salsa dancing for years but haven't brushed up in a while, and my partner has been wanting to take some lessons with me. We went last night. It was like nothing I'd ever done before. I was a beginner at salsa? Casino salsa, salsa in the round, is different from what you normally see in clubs around here. It's a fusion of Cuban salsa...and square dance. Last night was the first time I've had someone ask me if it was my first time salsa dancing since I was in middle school... and I effin' loved it!! Here's an example of what it looks like when done well... ignore the screenshot. Hooray! Last night I did 30 minutes of fan spinning and rehearsing for last night's gig with Cloud City Circus at the Analog Cafe in SE Portland! (...which is why I didn't have time to post my blog.) I still find that my discouraging self-talk has me by the ....horns... but there's certainly a sense of accomplishment in doing it anyway. I was inspired by this article about how monumental improvements come incrementally... with patience! Last night I even did a 1.5 minute video of my fan spinning, though I'm unable to post it right now. It's embarassingly bad (opinions, opinions) but after seeing this video, I'm inspired to keep shooting so that I can make an excellent montage some day. Sunday afternoon I know I'll be getting my 30 in at Muse Ecstatic Dance, DJ'd by the Melting Pot!
Since waking this morning, I have done exactly this:
Things I Have Learned: I am very easily discouraged, and very hard on myself. Within the first four minutes of drilling the voices in my head began a chorus of "seriously, you've had these fans for this long and this is all you've got? You've been drilling these spins and you are still this bad at it?" But I kept at it, did the whole 30 minutes, and I was definitely seeing improvement by the end of it. So there. I did it. I win. 2014 and I are homies, and I think this thing is gonna turn out all right. Happy New Year! |
