Don't much mind meetings no mo'

I've been doing my hobby professionally for about 7 years now.  This means that I get to do my hobby to its fullest but it also means doing the business part to its fullest.  Keeping track of spreadsheets, notes, agendas, googledocs, DropBoxes, and of course...tons of meetings.  I learned years ago that working in groups of 3 was a perfect balance, a great way to get a majority vote on anything, to even out people's various interests and skills.  When it happens to be 3 friends, it's like a magical alchemical (woooooooo) combo of love, support, inspiration, challenge, motivation, and boundary enforcement of the most beautiful kind.

(props here to elise and jen, and the lesson we all learned producing Bellydance Uncorked!)

Jasmine Rain, Erika Ryn, and I have been performing together as Bridgetown Revue for about 5 years at this point.  We produce shows, we create our own costumes, we teach classes, and we even choreograph -- even moreso lately, and it's been a delightful surprise to see it come together when, I think, each of us had our reservations (memorize stuff?  rehearse twice a week *on top* of our meetings?  who has time for that!?).

So in just over a week, we are SUPER SUPER excited to share with you a new choreography, new costumes, and A NEW WORKSHOP.  A workshop dedicated to highlighting the skills and expertise and enthusiasm that all three of us have honed, as a group, and individually.  This isn't just a dance workshop - it's a lecture on historical, mythical, and cultural background of movements, an exploration in our personal connections to the movement, and a lesson in how those movements occur in our bodies and our culture in the present moment... all culminating in a cute little combo you can take home with you!

I sure hope you'll enjoy this workshop as much as we've been enjoying putting it together, talking about it, creating outlines and shared googledocs, teaching it to each other, and wiggling our hips as we meet over walks to the drugstore....just three girls, two parasols, 6 cheeks and one more meeting left until ....

And here I've been thinking this summer was a little scant on performances...

I'm now in the throes of preparing for a TON of them!

First up, Bridgetown Revue is going to perform a brand new choreography at Jamballah's Saturday night showcase.  As if this wasn't enough, we'll also be teaching a brand new, really unique and inspiring workshop on Sunday afternoon!  I'm really excited about this - Bridgetown usually performs improv as a group, so creating choreography has been a challenge in the most fun and exciting (and personally joyous) ways.  The workshop will be a true representation of our triad's strengths.  I hope you can come!

The next weekend, I've been asked to join APSARA (my alma-mater!) in a gig at a Turkish Bathhouse in Los Angeles.  Sure this means I need to memorize brand-new-to-me choreography in two weeks, but hey.  Turkish bathhouse.  LA.

And then it's back home for a warmup and recharge amazing awesome gig with my faves!

If I don't see you at these gigs, I'll be seeing you at TTITD!

We leave for Black Sheep after work tomorrow!

Next Friday marks the beginning of a most magical weekend of celebrating a 50th birthday party in downtown San Francisco (a Takimba fan!), cameo at Camp Questionmark's annual Burn-camp Fundraiser, Nomadic Caravan (what luck!).  Saturday the 2nd we'll probably not be sleeping either, because it's "Get Down!" at The Goodfoot with Takimba and Manoj, after which we shall mosey (float, bounce, roll) over to the house-formerly-known-as-the-WooMansion for Spades' firejam-brunch-onesieyoga-moving-in-party.  As if this wasn't enough excitement and hyphens, the next day (or rather, after brunch) is a FREE Flaming Lips show at Waterfront Park.

I've been to a couple 'Lips shows.  I've been to the Park when there are 75k people there.  I have not done both at the same time.

Then again, I'll be at Burningman in EXACTLY a month, for the fourth time.  So, I guess, I kinda have.

(ps-  my birthday is in 2.5 months!  I turn 30 in October, and kindly request that you hold the weekend of Oct 10-12 for yet-to-be-confirmed festivities.  Beach house?  Multiple beach houses?  With hot tubs? And fire jams?  And jam-jams?  And a dome?)

Summer Meltdown

It's been hot here.  Really hot.  Maybe not objectively, but subjectively I must say that it's hot, because that's all you hear people around here talking about.

...except for today, in which I awoke to the sound of rain.  Lovely, refreshing rain.  Huzzah!

Last weekend we escaped the rush of Portland, and festivals, and rafting trips (sadface) to see a couple of friends get married on a farm in Southern Oregon.  It was absolutely beautiful and well worth the 5-hour drive for a 24-hour trip.  Driving down I-5 that far is a good reminder of how diverse Oregon really is - and how easy it is to believe in the Right and True-ness of one's prevalent culture when you're so thickly immersed within it.

Bible quotes all. over. the. highway.

Sagebrush.

Gun-totin' grocery shoppers.

But now I'm back in the liberal paradise of Portland proper, where I will again unpack and repack for this weekend's trip to the Black Sheep Family Reunion at Tidewater Falls, a beautiful coastal forest oasis, featuring fire performance by BRIDGETOWN REVUE!  See you there!

Last week was an absolute flurry of activity, between Burlynomicon, my partner's mom visiting, and packing/planning/traveling to Portland's Regional Burningman even, SOAK.

Everything was awesome!

Highlights from Burlynomicon:

1. Tomorrow is Burlynomicon at the Lovecraft Bar!  It's dark, it's sassy, it's sexy, it's funny, and it'll be overrun with Bridgetown Revue members!  SE Grand just south of Burnside.

2.  Oregon Fire Conclave has been accepted to perform in the Great Circle, the foot of the Man before it officially burns.  We've been working at it for six months already!  I am so happy!!

IT GETS EVEN BETTER! Not only do you have tomorrow off (lucky you!) but that means you get to enjoy an evening of fun TONIGHT!  I hope it'll be at Analog with me and Cloud City Circus for our anniversary show.

And on Sunday, don't miss the annual Playground park dance party!  Once a year there's a free outdoor dance party in Cathedral Park.  It's under the St. Johns Bridge, on the water, and goes all day long.  Bring your kids, bring your dog, bring a cooler of snacks and drinks (ahem...stealthy-like or non-alcoholic) to share and stay all day!  Bump the beats, slap on some 'screen and join us!

I forgot to mention it, but on Monday I finished the 30-day Ab Challenge!  This has been the year of month-long challenges and so far I am happy to report that the habits developed during these months have actually stuck around, in some form or fashion, positively influencing my life!

I think my next challenge should involve drinking water, because eventually this steady intake of coffee and vodka will cause problems.  Until then, though...

Come out to see me at Cloud City Circus' first Thursday (and second anniversary!) show tomorrow night!
